Since the inauguration on Friday, there have been many “opinions” expressed on the propriety of the statements by the new President and his staff. However, the press may be ignoring an important signal from President Trump. Presidents normally put the busts of people they respect in prominent places—like the Oval Office.
The bust of Winston Churchill was removed from the Oval Office by President Obama but returned by President Trump.
Churchill is famous for his unwillingness to quit and his ability to keep the English in the fight against Hitler when almost no one else thought it possible. He was also quick to respond to critics. His attitude was that when you act decisively, someone is going to object. He said, “You have enemies? Good. That means you've stood up for something, sometime in your life.”
Real Tax Reform
President Trump is going to hear from many Members of Congress that it is very “dangerous” to attempt to do real tax reform.
They will not be able to convincingly argue that their proposed changes to the existing income/payroll tax system will:
- Reduce the continued growing tax evasion
- Reduce materially the cost of the present system
- Eliminate the need for millions to file individual tax returns
- Eliminate the regressive method of funding Social Security and Medicare
- Provide border adjustability that will withstand the legitimate attacks of our trading partners
- Show the true cost of the federal government
- What is the purpose of a tax?
- If it is to fund the operations of the federal government, then why not create a system that collects the most tax with the least negative effect on the people and the economy?
- Why not show the American people the true cost of their government?
When Trump answers these Members of Congress, he should share this Churchill quote, “One ought never to turn one's back on a threatened danger and try to run away from it. If you do that, you will double the danger. But if you meet it promptly and without flinching, you will reduce the danger by half. Never run away from anything. Never!”
It is time to do the right thing for America. The present income/payroll tax system is a prime example of what is wrong with Washington, D.C.
President Trump said in his inaugural address:
"For too long, a small group in our nation’s capital has reaped the rewards of government while the people have borne the cost. Washington flourished, but the people did not share in its wealth. Politicians prospered, but the jobs left, and the factories closed. The establishment protected itself, but not the citizens of our country. Their victories have not been your victories. Their triumphs have not been your triumphs, and while they celebrated in our nation’s capital, there was little to celebrate for struggling families all across our land.”
It is time to eliminate the system that provides rewards to the D.C. Elite and penalizes the rest of America. It will be hard to fight the entrenched powers. But this President is not afraid of a fight. As he looks at the landscape, he can also remember another Churchill quote, “The pessimist sees difficulty in every opportunity. The optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.”
