Chairman's Report - November 23, 2017

 THANKSGIVING MESSAGE

To all of our FAIRtax supporters and volunteers, on behalf of Americans For Fair Taxation, I want to extend our best wishes for a wonderful and enjoyable Thanksgiving Holiday!

On the 20th day of October, 1864, Abraham Lincoln proclaimed that the last Thursday of November was to be a day of Thanksgiving.  Here is in part the text of his proclamation:

Now, therefore, I, Abraham Lincoln, President of the United States, do hereby appoint and set apart the last Thursday in November next as a day which I desire to be observed by all my fellow-citizens, wherever they may then be, as a day of thanksgiving and praise to Almighty God, the beneficent Creator and Ruler of the Universe. And I do further recommend to my fellow-citizens aforesaid that on that occasion they do reverently humble themselves in the dust and from thence offer up penitent and fervent prayers and supplications to the Great Disposer of Events for a return of the inestimable blessings of peace, union, and harmony throughout the land which it has pleased Him to assign as a dwelling place for ourselves and for our posterity throughout all generations.

One interesting thing about the above address is that even though the U.S. was in the middle of a bloody civil war, Lincoln wasn’t asking for “Almighty God” to help the Union forces defeat the Confederates.  He was asking that all of the people in the divided country give thanks for the blessings they had received.

The Swamp Is Getting Worried

All of us know that the residents of the Swamp will never willingly allow real tax reform.  They profit from the present income/payroll tax system and have grown used to being able to ignore what is good for the rest of us.

However, the residents of the Swamp are worried.  As our supposed rulers, they cannot understand why the rest of us are upset that they have used their power to sexually harass men and women.  They criticized when others sexually harassed women or men, but those laws and standards were not supposed to apply to the residents of the Swamp--our betters.  These residents of the Swamp are starting to look over their shoulders.

After all, if we are questioning the actions of our betters with regard to sexual harassment, is it possible that we will start questioning why the residents of the Swamp are allowed to profit from an insane income/payroll tax system that penalizes the rest of us?

The Republican tax proposal can be likened to giving someone with a broken arm a shot of morphine.   The person may feel better for a time, but unless the broken arm is set and a cast affixed, the pain will not go away.

The residents of the Swamp are ignoring the $9 trillion of evasion over the next decade.  They are just adding to our national debt to cover up this evasion.

People are more comfortable with people breaking the law by evading taxes, similar to drinking during Prohibition. This problem is only going to get worse.  The nation’s workforce continues to move away from the employer-employee model to more independent contractors--a group that evades taxes at a much higher rate than W-2 employees whose taxes are withheld.

The only way to “fix” the problem is to dismantle the income tax/payroll tax system and replace it with the FAIRtax.

The end of the power of the residents of the Swamp to only benefit themselves and their friends at our expense is coming to an end.  We give thanks for this as well as all of our personal blessings.

I leave you with a quote from Bill Gates:

You may have heard of Black Friday and Cyber Monday. There's another day you might want to know about: Giving Tuesday. The idea is pretty straightforward. On the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, shoppers take a break from their gift-buying and donate what they can to charity.
