This year American businesses and individual taxpayers will spend more than $430 billion in tax preparation costs just to comply with our indecipherable 74,000 plus pages of the Federal income tax code and regulations. What a waste of time and money! The income tax system is a failing Federal revenue-raising experiment.
The Founding Fathers of our Constitution specifically forbade direct taxation in Article I Sections 2, 8, and 9, where they recognized the evil nature of taxing a citizen’s productivity. And the Supreme Court in 1895 ruled that income tax in America was unconstitutional. But in 1913, the politicians convinced the citizens that an income tax was needed to run our country and it would only affect the rich. Thereafter, our elected officials supported the passage of the 16th Amendment to the Constitution which gave Congress “the power to lay and collect taxes on income from whatever source derived. “
Our Government has been overspending every year (currently a $19 plus trillion debt). We also have a serious income tax evasion problem on the revenue side. A March 2017 landmark study by Dr. Richard Cebula from Jacksonville University in Florida addressed the growing concern of people choosing not to pay their share of income/payroll taxes (the tax gap evasion). This study concludes that over the next ten years the accumulated tax gap will be between $6-9 trillion dollars. Those lost funds could be used to pay down our debt. Plus, complying taxpayers will have to make up for this tax evasion.
Congress is now proposing tax reform measures on an ever-growing failing income tax system that is supported by the D.C. Elites and tax lobbyists. We made major changes to the income tax code in 1986 but three decades later, we are in the same quagmire. Taxing American productivity is the problem. The currently proposed administration’s income tax changes are like rearranging the deck chairs on the sinking Titanic. We have 100 years of historical evidence that the income tax system in America needs to be replaced.
Our politicians need to think outside the D.C. box. We should demand replacement, not modification. We need to recognize the founding fathers’ wisdom and raise funds for the federal government via a national consumption tax. Follow the lead of 45 States who already collect a substantial amount of their revenue via a sales tax; it works and evasion is very low!
The good news is that there is a national sales tax bill in Congress - H.R. 25/ S 18. This Bill replaces the IRS income tax system with a national retail sales tax on all goods and services which will allow all taxpayers to see the true cost of their government.
Visit FAIRTAX.ORG and BIGSOLUTION.ORG for research/details on the FAIRtax bill in Congress. Under the FAIRtax, no IRS, no income tax, no payroll tax, no sales tax on used goods and April 15 is just another spring day. A national consumption tax is simple to administer, certainly efficient for Americans with no recordkeeping required, visible for all to see and drastically reduces tax evasion.
