A GREAT NATIONAL VOICE FOR THE FAIRTAX
Many of us smile and agree with the statement by Spenser Tracy, “Acting is not the noblest profession in the world, but there are things lower than acting. Not many, mind you - but politicians give you something to look down on from time to time.”
The rest of us who have to work for a living and who look with disbelief on many of the actions of politicians and bureaucrats don’t find this statement by humorist P.J. O’Rourke funny at all but all too true: “Politicians are wonderful people as long as they stay away from things they don't understand, such as working for a living.”
That is why we should always acknowledge and applaud any politician who is willing to defy the Swamp and their servants in Congress and advocate something that is good for the rest of us—not just them. A former governor of Arkansas, Mike Huckabee is a politician. However, since he first ran for the Republican presidential nomination in 2008, Governor Mike Huckabee has been a steadfast proponent of replacing the income/payroll tax system with the FAIRtax.
He has taken this position in Presidential debates and all across the country. He has proven wrong the politicians who have co-sponsored the FAIRtax bill but who refuse to talk about the FAIRtax in their campaigns because, “They won’t be able to answer the critics who say it is regressive or that it hurts lower income people or how the new taxation system really works.”
Not only has Governor Huckabee answered all of the critics of the FAIRtax, he has embarrassed many politicians who are dedicated to preserving the income tax and all of the benefits from the Swamp—even if their position is clearly not the best for all of us.
He is not a candidate now, but he has a national podium and still speaks out about things that are important—like the FAIRtax. The Governor kindly gave his permission for us to reprint his article.
Remind me again why we haven’t replaced the IRS with the FAIRtax
Mike Huckabee
July 5, 2018
It seems as if Congress is always trying to pass some bill that that’s so big, we won’t know what’s in it until it’s the law. And that always works out swell…for the government, not for us.
For instance, in 2015, Congress voted on an 864-page highway funding bill. The Wall Street Journal, which was one of the few media outlets that actually took the time to slog through the whole thing, discovered that buried deep inside it was yet another new power for the Internal Revenue Service (I don’t know how the IRS relates to highways, unless it’s because they treat us like speed bumps, or maybe because some tax rates are highway robbery.)
For some inexplicable reason, the proposed “highway funding bill” gave the State Department the right to revoke or deny your passport if you owed the IRS more than $50,000. Once it was spotted, its backers assured us this would “usually” only apply to Americans with IRS liens on their property, and “likely” wouldn’t hit those who’d made payment arrangements. I don’t know about you, but I’m “usually” not comfortable with giving broad new powers to the IRS on the promise that they “usually” wouldn’t expand them and “likely” wouldn’t abuse them.
This is why I never understood why I remain the only major Presidential candidate who’s run on a platform of replacing the income tax with the consumption-based Fair Tax. Any other proposal to flatten rates or simplify the tax code still keeps the IRS in place in some form. And from their targeting of taxpayers for their political beliefs to taking the Fifth and destroying evidence; from unconstitutionally acting as prosecutor, judge and jury; to their unlawful seizing of property and jailing of Americans, the IRS has proven that it is unworthy of the powers it already has.
As of 2015, we already had 85,000 IRS agents. That was over twice as many IRS agents as FBI agents, and over 14 times more IRS agents than CIA agents. During the hearings into the targeting of conservative nonprofits, IRS officials displayed undisguised contempt both for the rules they’re supposed to obey and the people’s representatives who are supposed to be their watchdogs. To add even more insult to injury, they later begged that their testimony - which was on the record and the property of the American people -- not be publicly released because they feared retribution if the American people found out what they said. This out-of-control agency certainly didn’t need new powers to curtail our right to move about freely.
The day the IRS was created, the fundamental relationship between the American people (the boss) and the government (their servant) was turned upside down. The government has no business demanding to know your income or controlling how you spend your own money. It certainly has no right to seize your property without due process of law, or to assume you're guilty until you prove yourself innocent. It’s time not only to stop punishing productivity, but to restore the proper relationship of government as the servant of the people, not the people as servants of the government. That can begin only when the Fair Tax replaces the income tax, and the IRS is no more.
CONCLUSION

We need to remind President Trump that we took seriously what he said in his 2016 speech accepting the Republican nomination. “Our aims – the aims of this Republican crusade – are clear: to sweep from office an administration which has fastened on every one of us the wastefulness, the arrogance and corruption in high places, the heavy burdens and anxieties which are the bitter fruit of a party too long in power.”
The President has been hard at work stopping new regulations and removing old regulations and that is great. He has not yet addressed the biggest source of arrogance and corruption—the income/payroll tax system and the IRS.
President Trump, Will Rogers said something in the 1930’s that is applicable today. “Everything is changing. People are taking their comedians seriously and the politicians as a joke.”
It is time to PASS THE FAIRTAX!
The truth is the truth. Remember, if we don't continue to tell the truth and demand a change, then this quote from George Orwell's 1984 may foretell our children's future:
“If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face—forever.”
WHAT CAN EACH OF US DO
Call up the local or D.C. offices of your House Member and two Senators and you can use the following script:
- I am sure that Representative ____ or Senator ____ is in favor of everyone obeying the income tax laws.
- After they assure you that their boss is not in favor of anyone breaking the law, ask if they are aware of the Cebula study showing $9 trillion of evaded income/payroll taxes over the next ten years.
- Since most will say they don’t believe their boss has seen the study, either drop off a copy or get an email address and send a copy to them for their boss.
- Say you are going to call back in a week and ask what the Representative or Senator is going to do to stop this evasion.
- In a week, call back and ask specifically what the Representative or Senator is going to do to enforce the law.
- They probably will say their boss believes that simplifying the income tax will handle the problem.
- Explain that when people evade income taxes, they are also evading the 15.3% payroll/Medicare tax and state income tax. So it is unlikely that they are going to pay 30% or 40% when they were paying 0% because they have already decided it is okay to cheat.
- Say that the only way to reduce evasion is to increase by tens or hundreds of thousands the number of comprehensive IRS audits done each year.
- Point out that Evaders do not self-identify by putting an “E” on their income tax return.
- 80% of the people likely to be audited are trying to comply, but they will be forced to endure these IRS audits as well.
- Ask if the Member is in favor of this?
- If they say no, then ask again how the Member proposes to stop people breaking the income tax laws.
- Then explain that the way to handle evasion without unleashing the IRS audits is the FAIRtax.
If you can see your Member or attend a town hall and ask these questions, you can be even more effective.
