THE BAND PLAYED WHILE THE TITANIC SANK
It is related that after the Titanic hit the iceberg, the Titanic band continued to play and some elegantly dressed people who could not get on a lifeboat listened and applauded. Most of the Members of Congress seem to think that if they just keep bowing to the Swamp and passing out crumbs to us they can ignore the debt abyss into which our country is rapidly descending.
In an article by Sarah McGregor for Bloomberg news entitled “U.S. Posts Biggest Budget Deficit Since 2012 As Tax Income Falls”, points out the following:
- The U.S. recorded a $215 billion budget deficit in February—its biggest in six years—as revenue declined.
- The deficit for the fiscal year that began in October widened to $391 billion, compared with a $351 billion shortfall the same period a year earlier, according to the Treasury report.
- The national debt has now surpassed $20 trillion.
Like the Titanic band, almost all Members of Congress ignore these reports because they assume that the government can continue to fund their overspending by simply adding to the debt. Somehow, they seem to believe that the debt will never have to be repaid so it is “free money.”
If it is “free money,” then there is no reason to offend anyone by making spending cuts or limiting hand-outs to the Swamp. If there is a day of reckoning, these Members of Congress seem to think that it will be after they have left Congress or at least after their Congressional retirement plan is vested.
Understanding $20 Trillion
One of the things that Congress is counting on is that the very concept of $20 trillion is so difficult to understand that people will just ignore it and not hold the Members of Congress accountable.
On the website for Endowment for Human Development, there are some great examples to help understand the magnitude of $20 trillion. Here are some examples based on the data on this page:
- The height of a stack of 20,000,000,000,000 (20 trillion) one dollar bills measures 1,357,320 miles. This would reach more than five times the distance from the earth to the moon.
- The area covered by 20,000,000,000,000 (20 trillion) one dollar bills measures 79,840 square miles. This would cover an area equal to 40 times the size of the state of Delaware.
- The length of 20,000,000,000,000 (20 trillion) one dollar bills laid end-to-end measures 1,938,133,120 miles. This would exceed the distance from the earth to the sun by 20 times.
- A person spending $20 per second, 24 hours per day will not spend $20 trillion for 30,170 years.
Conclusion
Because of their corrupt relationships with the Swamp, Congress ignores the only type of proposal that will not only grow the economy much more rapidly, eliminate the need for tariffs and also produce more revenue for the government—the FAIRtax.
General Chuck Yeager was the first pilot confirmed to have exceeded the speed of sound in level flight. He said, “You do what you can for as long as you can, and when you finally can’t, you do the next best thing. You back up but you don’t give up.”
The one thing that the Swamp and Congress cannot do is answer logical questions about the consequences of their actions. Congress cannot explain to their constituents how taking “legal bribes” to benefit some but not the rest of us is the right thing to do. We just have to keep demanding they answer these questions because they are supposed to represent us—not just the ones with the most money.
I know that sometimes we feel that, when facing the Swamp, we are like Sisyphus, who was forced to push a large rock up a hill only to have it roll back down, and then Sisyphus would have to start all over again. While the Swamp has money, we the people have votes and the most important goal of almost all Members of Congress is to be re-elected.
We must not give up!
President Trump and Congress, do the right thing and push the FAIRtax through to passage. Yes, you will offend the Swamp but you will save the country.
WHAT CAN EACH OF US DO
Call up the local or D.C. offices of your House Member and two Senators and you can use the following script:
- I am sure that Representative ____ or Senator ____ is in favor of everyone obeying the income tax laws.
- After they assure you that their boss is not in favor of anyone breaking the law, ask if they are aware of the Cebula study showing $9 trillion of evaded income/payroll taxes over the next ten years.
- Since most will say they don’t believe their boss has seen the study, either drop off a copy or get an email address and send a copy to them for their boss.
- Say you are going to call back in a week and ask what the Representative or Senator is going to do to stop this evasion.
- In a week, call back and ask specifically what the Representative or Senator is going to do to enforce the law.
- They probably will say their boss believes that simplifying the income tax will handle the problem.
- Explain that when people evade income taxes, they are also evading the 15.3% payroll/Medicare tax and state income tax. So it is unlikely that they are going to pay 30% or 40% when they were paying 0% because they have already decided it is okay to cheat.
- Say that the only way to reduce evasion is to increase by tens or hundreds of thousands the number of comprehensive IRS audits done each year.
- Point out that Evaders do not self-identify by putting an “E” on their income tax return.
- 80% of the people likely to be audited are trying to comply, but they will be forced to endure these IRS audits as well.
- Ask if the Member is in favor of this?
- If they say no, then ask again how the Member proposes to stop people breaking the income tax laws.
- Then explain that the way to handle evasion without unleashing the IRS audits is the FAIRtax.
If you can see your Member or attend a town hall and ask these questions, you can be even more effective.

FAIRTAX WINS AGAIN WHEN COMPARED TO INCOME TAX
After a brief review of civil asset forfeiture, The FAIRtax Guys emphasize the huge differences between the FAIRtax and the income tax such as simplicity vs. complexity or limited evasion vs. huge evasion. The many advantages of the FAIRtax are spelled out in great detail. Use these comparisons to help others understand why the FAIRtax is superior to any other tax plan.
THERE ARE MANY POTENTIAL FAIRTAX SUPPORTERS AT A LOCAL FESTIVAL
One on One encounters are often the most productive. In last week’s episode of FAIRtax Power Radio, The FAIRtax Guys give advice to other FAIRtax volunteers on how to approach people at a public event while manning a FAIRtax Information Booth. The Guys review the entire range of responses from totally ignoring you to proclaiming their long time support for the FAIRtax and wanting to help out. As you encounter people and try to explain the benefits of the FAIRtax, you will probably experience some of these same responses.
