Washington, DC, the U.S. capital, is on the Potomac River and is encircled by the states of Maryland and Virginia. It lies on 68.34 square miles and has a population of 672,228. Born out of a compromise between Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson with the active assistance of George Washington, it is the capital city of the U.S.
Because I believe it is my responsibility to monitor the news stories about events in D.C., daily I see hysterical “experts” who assert opinions. The only qualifications for these “experts” seem to be that they are presentable on television, have lived and worked in D.C., drink the D.C. water and breathe the D.C. air.
Few of these “experts” have any real expertise in actually confronting and solving the problems that are facing our country. They simply have a viewpoint and every issue is seen as an opportunity to promote their viewpoint—not to be helpful in really solving a problem.
Alexis de Tocqueville wrote a book entitled Democracy in America that was published in 1835. After visiting Washington, D.C., he said, “On my arrival in the United States I was struck by the degree of ability among the governed and the lack of it among the governing.”
In fact, few of these “experts” have any interest in seeing the problems solved because then who would listen to them? Also, these are the same “experts” who have watched the national debt soar, Social Security become even more insolvent and the other problems of our government grow and grow. They had no solution then and don’t now. Their solution is be as interesting as possible to others in their D.C. circle.
What Do Real People Think of D.C.?
Real people who don’t drink the D.C. water and breathe the D.C. air are not buying the D.C. act. Real people know that problems have to be faced and solved or they will create huge problems for them. They don’t get paid to be “talking heads” who never actually solve any problems but just spew whatever words seem to forward their agenda.
A Gallup Poll showed that Congress had the lowest approval rating of all groups. This lack of confidence in Congress and the D.C. establishment is not helped by the outrage that the new President is somehow not playing by the “go along and get along” rules that have led to a $20 trillion debt and unfunded liabilities that some estimate are as high as $50 trillion. Is there any other place in America that would continue to pay these people in D.C. for these results?
As Jon Stewart, pointed out, “If con is the opposite of pro, then isn’t Congress the opposite of progress?”
Tax Reform and Logic
It is for these reasons that we are naïve if we believe that the D.C. group is going to willingly adopt the FAIRtax, real tax reform. No, the D.C. group fears the FAIRtax. Without the present broken income/payroll tax system to discuss and lobby, what would all of these retired Members of Congress and their former staff members do for employment? What would all of the “experts” in think tanks do?
No, the only way that we are going to succeed is if we can let the Members know that their actions will be remembered when it is time to choose people to run against them in their primaries. If they persist in ignoring the solutions that work for all of us, then we will replace them.
Conclusion
While it would be easy to feel despondent about the D.C. situation, there is always hope. Gandhi led a peaceful rebellion against one of the greatest powers on earth. He said that there were four stages of any successful revolution. First, they ignore you. Second, they laugh at you. Third, they attack you. Fourth, you win.
In groups around the country you will hear stories like the following:
- A bus full of politicians was moving along the country road. Then it crashed into the tree and overturned. Blood and glass were everywhere. A middle-aged farmer working on the field nearby saw the accident and decided to help: he dug a huge hole and buried all the politicians who were still alive. He thought he did his country a good service.
- The two U.S. cities with the highest alcohol consumption are Las Vegas and Washington, DC. The difference between the two is that in Washington the drunks are gambling with our money instead of their own.
- A priest went into a Washington, D.C., barbershop, got his hair cut and asked how much he owed. “No charge, Father,” the barber said. “I consider it a service to the Lord.” When the barber arrived at his shop the next morning, he found a dozen small prayer booklets on the stoop along with a thank you note from the priest. A few days later a police officer came in. “How much do I owe you?” the cop asked after his haircut. “No charge, officer,” the barber answered. “I consider it a service to my community.” The next morning the barber found a dozen doughnuts on the stoop along with a thank you note from the police officer. A few days after that, a Senator walked in for a haircut. “How much do I owe you?” he asked afterward. “No charge,” the barber replied. “I consider it a service to my country.” The next morning when he arrived at the shop, the barber found a dozen Senators waiting on the stoop.
- What do you call a lawyer with an IQ of 100? A: Your Honor. Q: What do you call a lawyer with an IQ of 50? A: Member of Congress.
- How many politicians does it take to change a light bulb? A: Two: one to change it and another one to change it back again.
- “Politics” is derived from the words “poly” meaning “many”, and “tics” meaning “blood-sucking parasites.”
- Instead of giving a politician the keys to the city, it might be better to change the locks. Do not steal – the government does not like competitors.
- What’s the difference between a magician and a politician? The magician returns your watch at the end of the performance.
It is time for these people who only care about themselves are replaced by people who actually care about us. Their time is coming soon.
WHAT CAN EACH OF US DO
Call up the local or D.C. office of the House Member and two Senators and you can use the following script:
- I am sure that Representative ____ or Senator ____ is in favor of everyone obeying the income tax laws.
- After they assure you that their boss is not in favor of anyone breaking the law, ask if they are aware of the Cebula study showing $9 trillion of evaded income/payroll taxes over the next ten years.
- Since most will say they don’t believe their boss has seen the study, either drop off a copy or get an email address and send a copy to them for their boss.
- Say you are going to call back in a week and ask what the Representative or Senator is going to do to stop this evasion.
- In a week, call back and ask specifically what the Representative or Senator is going to do to enforce the law.
- They probably will say their boss believes that simplifying the income tax will handle the problem.
- Explain that when people evade income taxes, they are also evading the 15.3% payroll/Medicare tax and state income tax. So it is unlikely that they are going to pay 30% or 40% when they were paying 0% because they have already decided it is okay to cheat.
- Say that the only way to reduce evasion is to increase by tens or hundreds of thousands the number of comprehensive IRS audits done each year.
- Point out that Evaders do not self-identify by putting an “E” on their income tax return.
- 80% of the people likely to be audited are trying to comply, but they will be forced to endure these IRS audits as well.
- Ask if the Member is in favor of this?
- If they say no, then ask again how the Member proposes to stop people breaking the income tax laws.
- Then explain that the way to handle evasion without unleashing the IRS audits is the FAIRtax.
