Chairman’s Report - March 13, 2020

The FAIRtax &
The Coronavirus

At first glance, the above title doesn’t make any sense.  The FAIRtax is the fantastic plan to replace all Federal-income and payroll-taxes with a 23% sales-tax on new retail goods and services.  The coronavirus is a viral strain challenging our health, creating havoc in the stock market and materially affecting business production in many countries around the world.

Many companies in China are affected, and aren’t able to supply companies in the U.S. and other parts of the world with products made or assembled in China.  A growing number of schools and colleges are closing their campuses and moving to online delivery, even for first and second graders.  Many sporting events are not allowing fans to attend but playing their games in front of empty bleachers.

Many companies are facing the tough choice of either keeping their offices open and requiring employees to come to work, or sending them home with many of them having no income from paid leave.  If the business stays open and someone becomes infected and infects others, is the business liable?  If the business sends valuable employees home, should they pay them?  What if the business can't afford to pay them if they’re not working?

Should people be concerned for their health and livelihood?  Of course!

The overwhelming percentage of deaths from the coronavirus appear to be the most elderly and people with other medical problems.  However, there are some deaths of younger people who didn't have other medical problems but apparently had a weakened immune system.
The Government Offers Help

Democrats and Republicans are rushing to find ways to help Americans who are going to be negatively affected by the coronavirus.  This includes not only providing medical help when they can, but also trying to soften the economic impact on our citizens.

The President is proposing a “holiday” where the 14.4% Social Security payroll-tax would be suspended.  This would give workers an immediate 7.2% raise, and allow businesses to keep 7.2% of the workers’ wages in their business.

The President is also looking at making this suspension permanent and funding Social Security from the general fund.  The problem is The President isn’t talking about raising other taxes to offset the loss of revenue.  Therefore the President’s plan would rapidly accelerate the impending insolvency of Social Security.

Others are proposing the federal government provide sick pay to workers who don’t have a sick pay plan with their employers.  Others want to combine this with increased amounts of unemployment insurance.

All of these measures may be necessary to prevent an economic meltdown, but where is the money going to come from to fund these plans?  Using past history, the government will just print more money and further increase the national debt.
If The Fairtax Were Law

Under The FAIRtax, if you want to provide money to people in an emergency like we are facing now, the government could easily increase the prebate amount sent monthly to each household or reduce The FAIRtax rate.

Addressing this problem with The FAIRtax would be much easier than having countless bureaucrats process these other programs which, like other “temporary” government programs in the past, will never go away.

Once the crisis has passed, returning to normalcy is quite simple.  Just change the prebate amount back to what it was and/or change The FAIRtax rate back to what it was.  That was easy!

Will this increase the deficit?  Yes, but each of you will know exactly how much.  We can easily look at the national debt and calculate on a napkin how much of a FAIRtax change would be needed to pay for any temporary stimulus after the crisis has passed.  We can easily calculate how much of an increase would be needed to balance the budget and pay off the national debt.

Would The FAIRtax solution help some wealthy people who don’t need the help?  Yes, but if it helps 10% of the population who don’t need the help, and 90% who do, 90-10 is a really good ratio.

What good does a reduced payroll-tax do for a worker who doesn’t have a job?
How long will it take to get people on unemployment insurance?
How will the person who has been quarantined even apply?

If you want to provide money to Americans today, then The FAIRtax would be a lot easier, more efficient and more effective than any of the current proposals.

Conclusion

No sane person would want the government to stand idly by and watch this coronavirus epidemic leave millions of Americans unable to provide even the most basic elements of survival for themselves.

For too long, Americans have ignored an essential task, confront and take responsibility for the way their federal government spends our money.  Nearly all of us live on a budget.  Why not require the federal government to live by a budget as well, but instead of it being numbers that make everyone’s eyes glaze over, why not have a system where we can all understand exactly how each dollar of federal spending impacts us?

This is easy with The FAIRtax, but impossible with the present corrupt income-payroll-tax system

Early native Alaskans used to be plagued by wolves coming around to steal meat from seals and other fish and animals they hunted for food.  The solution they devised was to take the very long, sharp knives they used, and dip them in the blood of the animals they killed.  Because of the cold, the blood would quickly freeze on the knife.  They kept dipping the knives into the blood and letting it freeze until they had a blood popsicle.  Then they would plant the hilt of the knives in the ice some distance from their igloos at night.

The wolves would come and eagerly start licking the blood until the edge of the knife was exposed and eventually, they would cut the lingual artery in their tongue.  The wolves would continue to lap up the warm blood until they dropped from blood loss.

In the morning the natives would find dead wolves.

Now is the time for Americans to wake up and insist on The FAIRtax so we can all be aware of federal spending and not suffer the same fate as the Alaskan wolves.

Now is the time to take back control of our income and our lives and demand a sane tax system to fund our Federal government.

Demand Congress to pass The FAIRtax—the only “Fair tax”!

The author George Bernard Shaw said these words in a play he wrote, You see things; and you say “Why?”  But I dream things that never were; and I say “Why not?”

Isn’t it time for us to ask, “Why not?”

President Trump, “Embrace the FAIRtax, the only Fair Tax the only fair tax and the only real tax reform!  Stand up to the Swamp.  They will oppose you anyway because they see you as a threat.  What have you got to lose?”

The truth is the truth.  Remember, if we don't continue to tell the truth and demand a change, then this quote from George Orwell's 1984 may foretell our children's future:

“If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face—forever.”

This week's Episode #203 - "Current Events & A Progress Report"

News from The Grassroots Corner, The FAIRtax Candidate Pledge, State Level FAIRtax initiatives, another IRS horror story and comparing the current income-tax-code to The BIBLE.  Whew!  There is something for everyone in this week's FAIRtax Power Radio.

We start with The Grassroots Corner by Jim Bennett.  How would you like to meet FAIRtax Volunteers from around the country on your travels?

Then we report on another FAIRtax Candidate’s Pledge, this one in Rhode Island.

Also, you’ll be surprised by the number of states taking steps to abandon their state-level-income-tax in favor of a consumption tax.  Can the federal government take a lesson from these states?

And what is the latest horror story from the IRS?  Wait until you hear this story about an honest businessman victimized by the IRS though their use of “civil asset forfeiture".

And finally, how does the current income-tax-code compare in length and complexity to The BIBLE, the Gettysburg Address, the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the FAIRtax bill, HR 25?  You’ll be unpleasantly surprised by the winner of the “long and convoluted” contest.

Join us for another information packed episode of FAIRtax Power Radio and you’ll be on your way to becoming a FAIRtax expert.

As always, the AFFT is looking for Volunteers to help their efforts.  Watch or listen to see if there is some small way you can help.

There’s always more in FAIRtax Power Radio such as a reminder of the promotional items available now at Click here to visit our Store and a review of Jim Bennett’s "Grassroots Corner Report".
What Can Each Of Us Do?

Call the local and DC offices of your Representative and 2 Senators.  Use the following script:

  • I am sure Representative ____ or Senator ____ is in favor of everyone obeying the income tax laws

  • After they assure you their boss is not in favor of anyone breaking the law, ask if they are aware of the Cebula study showing $9 trillion of evaded income-payroll taxes over the next 10 years

  • Since most will say they don’t believe their boss has seen the study, drop off a copy, email a copy or click Read Evasion Study Summary and copy/paste the link into an email

  • Say you are going to call back in a week and ask what the Representative or Senator is going to do to stop this evasion

  • In a week, call back and ask specifically what the Representative or Senator is going to do to enforce the law

  • They probably will say their boss believes simplifying the income tax will handle the problem

  • Explain, when people evade income taxes, they are also evading the 15.3% payroll/Medicare tax and state income tax.  So, it’s unlikely they are going to pay 30-40% when they were paying 0% because they have already decided it’s okay to cheat

  • Say, the only way to reduce evasion is to increase by tens or hundreds of thousands the number of comprehensive IRS audits done each year

  • Point out Evaders do not self-identify by putting an “E” on their income tax return

  • 80% of the people likely to be audited are trying to comply, but they will be forced to endure these IRS audits as well

  • Ask if the Member is in favor of this?

  • If they say no, then ask again how the Member proposes to stop people breaking the income tax laws

  • Then explain the way to handle evasion without unleashing the IRS audits is The FAIRtax

  • If you meet with your Representative or attend a town hall and ask these questions, you will be even more effective
