Making It Itch In Iowa

FAIRtax-er Claude Merzenich from Decorah, Iowa, is the itch to Rep. Finkenauer who won’t go away.  Just recently Rep. Finkenauer, IA-01, sent a newsletter to her constituents ballyhooing the help her office gave to a constituent who was having trouble with his Federal tax return.  Here is the newsletter excerpt from the section "Helping our Friends and Neighbors"

A constituent from Waverly contacted our office because he has not received his federal-income-tax-return.  He filed on time and the state return came within a few weeks, but the federal still had not.

We contacted the IRS and learned there was a discrepancy with what he reported and what he could prove.  The IRS had not notified the Waverly constituent of the problem, but we were able to tell him how to fix the problem and file an amended report.  He has followed the steps and is expecting an $18,000 refund.

If you or anyone you know is having trouble with the IRS, Social Security, disability, or Medicare issue or a veteran needs help getting a medal or benefits, please contact our office.

Rep. Finkenauer obviously was attempting to get mileage out of the taxpayer’s misfortune by making it the subject of her newsletter.

However, the newsletter came before the wrong pair of eyes.

Claude Mertzenich figuratively, picked up his pen and wrote the following message to the Represntative’s staffer:

“Hello Steffanie [Steffanie Bezruki, Legislative Director], “I see the following in the latest Weekly Update from Congresswoman Finkenauer, [Quoting the “Helping Our Friends and Neighbors” passage]

“Under The FAIRtax H.R.25, there will be no filing of income-tax returns because there will be no income-tax, and everyone will get their full paycheck without any withholding.  And under The FAIRtax the particular constituent mentioned above would NEVER have the problem they encountered under the current unwieldy, inefficient, unfair (loophole ridden) system of taxation.

“As a representative of Americans for Fair Taxation (AFFT) here in Iowa, I hope progress is being made in Rep. Finkenauer's decision to support and co-sponsor The FAIRtax.  I and several other FAIRtax supporters were recently at the Rep. Finkenauer's town hall meeting in Decorah, and I got to speak to her and the rest of the people present about The FAIRtax.

The FAIRtax will be a GREAT benefit to all of the constituents in district 1.  It's true The FAIRtax is a paradigm shift with regard to taxation relative to the income-tax, but I hope you and the Rep. Finkenauer will keep in mind the words of Herbert Spencer:

“There is a principle which is a bar against all information,
which is proof against all arguments and
which cannot fail to keep a man in everlasting ignorance,
the principle is contempt prior to investigation”.

We think Claude is playing it exactly right.  Claude’s messaging to his Congress Member is neither antagonistic nor fawning, but just a little bit of an itch.  And he stirred up other supporters, too, which should be the long-term strategy for bringing Rep. Finkenauer around to finally co-sponsor The FAIRtax.  Or maybe Claude will run, take her seat, and co-sponsor The FAIRtax himself.

Let me know what you are doing to advocate for The FAIRtax.
